Talking Dolls

If you are thinking of getting talking dolls for your children before they turn four, you may want to reconsider. Though all children are different, I have yet to meet one that likes the talking dolls. My daughter was frightened of them from the start, but for some reason that didn’t stop my mom from buying them for her. I have had to put many of them away because she was scared to death, and many of them are still in her closet. I might just have to give in and throw them out once and for all.

One of the first talking dolls my mom got for her was from a discount store. She stood on her own and had a guitar. She was cute enough, but when she sang, there were four different voices. Though many would call that harmony, my daughter thought it was horrible. The first time it sang for her she cried for two hours. I told my mom that I didn’t want her to buy any more talking dolls, but she ended up getting her another one just six months later.

 Bit of History
Because the priest must have like every dog his day
Or keep us all awake with baying at the moon,
We and our dolls being but the world were best away.
—William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

The next in the long line of talking dolls was better, but my daughter was still afraid of it. This doll was a singing and dancing Dora. I have to admit that it is very cute, but that didn’t mean it was ok to have in her bedroom at night. My daughter played with it during the day and had a lot of fun with it, but when it came time to go to bed Dora was banished from her room. She was afraid it would come on in the middle of the night. Some talking dolls will do this on their own for some reason, so I have to make sure it is out of her room each night.

She has seen talking dolls on television that my daughter says she wants, but there is no way I am going to get them for her. I don’t want to have to spend an hour each night finding and removing the talking dolls from her room. I’m not trying to be mean, but I know what is going to happen. I took her to the store and she got close to a few of the ones she has said she wants. She looked at me with solemn eyes and told me that perhaps she doesn’t want them after all. I don’t know many things, but I do know my own kid.
