The computer mouse first began to be used with the Apple computers in 1984. Now, mice are used on a daily basis by thousands who use computers. A computer mouse can sense your motions and your clicks and helps send them to your computer.

A computer mouse is usually connected to the computer using a USB port, which is the same port that other peripheral devices use. Older computers and mice may use the round PS/2 connector instead. Before buying a new mouse, it is always wise to see what kind of port or connector your computer uses.

There are three major types of computer mice that are widely available. The mechanical mouse requires that the mouse must be set on a flat surface. The distance and the speed of the roller inside the mouse determine how far the mouse cursor can move on the screen. A newer type of computer mouse is the optical mouse. These types of mice require a special mouse pad with a grid pattern. When the mouse moves over the grid, the sensor in the mouse determines the movement. While the mouse passes over the grid, it emits a might from an LED or sometimes a laser light. Sometimes these kinds of mice can have problems operating in very bright lights.

When you purchase a new computer, a mouse is usually included. But there are more varieties of computer mice than just the standard issue. If you want to purchase a new mouse to replace an older version, here are the top three things to consider when shopping for a computer mouse.

 Historical Quote
Sometimes, because of its immediacy, television produces a kind of electronic parable. Berlin, for instance, on the day the Wall was opened. Rostropovich was playing his cello by the Wall that no longer cast a shadow, and a million East Berliners were thronging to the West to shop with an allowance given them by West German banks! At that moment the whole world saw how materialism had lost its awesome historic power and become a shopping list.
—John Berger (b. 1926)

Color and design: When looking at buying a computer mouse for your computer there are several designs and options available. You do not have to settle for a plain gray colored mouse any more. You can purchase mice in several stylish colors. Look around to see what is available before you purchase a plain computer mouse. Now you can purchase mice that have more than just two buttons. Many now are available with three, four or even five buttons. It may seem like a lot of buttons, but each button can be programmed to do common computer tasks. A wheel is now a commonly found and used feature on the computer mouse. The wheel allows the computer user to scroll through pages without moving the cursor to the scroll bar. This feature is a popular choice for many users because it is easy to use and very convenient. The mouse wheel also comes highly recommended.

Software: When choosing a new computer mouse, look into the type of software that it comes with. Many computer mice come with extra features such as buttons or wheels. These features will require special software to make the features compatible with your computer. The software will allow the extra buttons to be programmed to do different takes.

Type of Mouse: When purchasing a new mouse you will need to consider the many different types of mice available. Most computer mice use optical mechanisms that use a ball and roller. This controls the movement of the mouse. This is a typical mouse feature however, there are newer mice that have more precise movement using optics. These types of mice use light to control the movement of the mouse and are becoming a popular choice. The optic mouse does not need frequent cleaning like the older versions of the optical mechanical mice.

Mice can also be purchased in many varieties including cordless, foot mouse, glide point, j mouse, joystick, touchpad, trackball, track-point, and wheel mouse. A cordless mouse is a good option because it does not require a wire or cord to make it operate with the computer. The movement is not restricted as those with wires. A foot mouse is an alternative to people who have limited movement of their arms or hands. A foot mouse allows the user to work their computer using only their feet. A touchpad or glide point is the type of mouse used mainly for laptops. This technology operated by using your finders and dragging it across a flat surface. The cursor will move in the direction of your finger. A j mouse is used for portable computers that use the 'j' key on the keyboard. Because this tends to be difficult, it is not widely used.
