Adults and children alike loved the movie, Toy Story and its sequel. The animated Pixar production told the story of a roomful of toys, belonging to a boy called Andy. The main characters were Woody the cowboy and Buzz Lightyear the astronaut, at first rivals but later to become great friends. The toy characters were marketed as real toys in the stores and a Buzz Lightyear toy is still a very popular item.

The first toy figures went into production in China and struggled to keep pace with the demand. Buzz was made from plastic and colored mainly in green, gray and blue. The inspiration for the character had come from the Apollo astronaut, Buzz Alldrin. In addition to toys, there are video games, lunch boxes, wallpaper and so on. Buzz Lightyear also starred in his own animated TV series.

The classic action figure incorporates Buzz's mission backpack, which fires a projectile. The wings on the backpack are attachable and can be fitted onto his arms to act as a defensive shield. Other ranges of Buzz Lightyear toy include the Star Command Cruiser playset, which includes various spacecraft and weaponry. The Action Squad set includes a Buzz action figure, an alien figure, space capsule, squad car, backpack, satellite and generator.

Scenes from the films are depicted in the various toys and children can have a lot of fun with role play. The Fire Fighting Red Leader has a backpack with a nitro foam blaster that shoots a nitro foam ball. The Space Defender Blue Leader has a super plasma deflector shield.

 Historical Quote
Man hath still either toys or care:
But hath no root, nor to one place is tied,
But ever restless and irregular,
About this earth doth run and ride.
He knows he hath a home, but scarce knows where;
He says it is so far,
That he has quite forgot how to go there.
—Henry Vaughan (1622–1695)

Buzz needs to move around and several different modes of transport help him. The Intergalactic Highway Patrol set includes a motorbike and sidecar and there is also a three in one Space Cruiser. The radio control car Buzz Lightyear toy has figures for both Buzz and Woody and is controlled by a remote handset. More role play is achieved with the Glider Pack, Toy Story Walkie Talkies and Galactic Guns.

It's also possible to dress up as Buzz in the one piece costume with detachable wings, mask, eye visor and boots. The costume is designed to fit three to five year olds. Young children can cuddle up to a Buzz Lightyear Bean Toy.

It has been announced that another Toy Story film is to be released in 2010. Tom Hanks is to voice Woody again and Tim Allen is to voice Buzz as before. The new film will probably introduce another generation of children to the delights of a Buzz Lightyear toy.
