Purchasing gifts for teenagers can prove to be quite difficult. They are fussy and usually want the newest, latest, greatest fads that are on the market today. Be prepared that no matter what you purchase for your teenager the response will be less than enthusiastic. That does not mean they do not appreciate the gift only that teenagers are less vocal as we already know the less they have to communicate with us older adults the better. Deep down they will be thrilled to receive the gift you buy them. That said let us look at some terrific ideas for teens.
IPod Nano is the new mp3 player that teenagers absolutely love. They can download their favorite music and change it according to their whims and very few teenagers will tell you they do not love this gift idea. An extra bonus is that it will save you the cost of buying all the music CDs they keep asking for. If your teenager has a collection of CDs, you might consider adding to that collection or even purchasing a gift certificate to their favorite music store. Another music idea would be to purchase a subscription to an on-line music link on the Internet so that they could download anything they wanted to for their mP3 player or simply burning their own music to create the genres they prefer.
DVD movies are another excellent choice for teenagers. You have the option of buying one movie or box sets. Does you teenager have a favorite television series that they just love to watch? Consider purchasing the series on DVD. Along with box set DVDs, they also make portable DVD players where the teenager could have their own private movie area and they even come with headphones!
Do you have an armature filmmaker in your family? Consider the gift of a digital camera or video cam. They make them in cool neon colors and come in smaller sizes that teens love to carry. They can download the pictures and/or movies to the computer and share their projects with friends and maybe the family will get a chance to see them as well. If you can convince your teenager, they can start filming family events for you!
Now if you have a family plan for cell phones what teenager would not love to have their own cell phone, especially if it was one of the newer ones with the text messaging and camera! You cannot go wrong with communication devices for the young teen.
For the fashion forward teen in your family, ask them what their favorite brands of make-up and hair accessories are. You could prepare a basket of make-up essentials for them and/or a gift certificate to a salon for a bit of pampering either alone or you may consider a combination certificate so that they can invite one of their girlfriends. They would especially appreciate this if they are going on a date or have special event planned.
Do you have a natural born critic in your home? Consider movie passes or tickets to concerts of their favorite artists. Again, to enjoy that smile spread across their face and have they squeal with excitement make it a pair of tickets so one of their friends can join in on the fun. Along the same line of thought, if you are planning a mini-vacation to an amusement park, telling them they can bring a friend or two is always a nice surprise.

The daily arguments over putting away the toys or practicing the piano defeat us so easily. We see them coming yet they frustrate us time and time again. In many cases, we are mothers and fathers who have managed budgets and unruly bosses and done difficult jobs well through sheer tenacity and dogged preparation. So why are we unable to persuade someone three feet tall to step into six inches of water at bathtime?

Are teenagers that difficult to surprise? Not really, it is more the fact that they do not talk much and cause us to play more of a guessing game to figure out what they really want. Certainly, this list will help you generate some ideas to surprise your teenager with a cool gift. Remember, if all else fails they will never turn down money.
